A Five-Part Documentary Presentation by Aaron Glantz and Esther Manilla
Earlier this year in Silver Spring, Maryland, there was
a remarkable gathering of U.S. veterans from the wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan. At Winter Soldier: Iraq & Afghanistan,
veterans told stories of atrocities they committed
or witnessed, of the toll of war on their psyches, and of
their personal transformations in belief about this country
and the military.
At 7 pm on Thursday evenings in November, KALW (91.7FM- San Francisco) is broadcasting a special five part documentary series showcasing some of the most powerful testimony from
Winter Soldier.
If you are interested in broadcasting the Winter Soldier series on your public radio station e-mail Aaron Glantz and Esther Manilla here.
At Winter Soldier, Iraq Veterans Against the War tried to build a historical record, showing how official Rules of Engagement handed down the chain of command lead to the deaths of innocent civilians. The longer the occupation went on, the more American soldiers were killed, the more the Rules of Engagement loosened. … Civilians were killed, innocent people arrested, and prisoners tortured.
Veterans speak about their own loss of humanity whie serving in a military occupation and how they struggle to get it back after returning home. We focus on the healing power of speaking out and telling the true stories of war and re-interview some of the veterans who spoke at Winter Soldier and about the impact it had on their lives. This segment also includes experts on the psychological effects of killing and the process of healing.
This segment focuses on the inability of service members to escape the military after they’ve completed their tours. It includes audio of veterans suffering from severe PTSD ordered back onto the battle field as well as military experts and critical thinkers who examine the on the implications of a never-ending war on the Armed Forces.
Watch Aaron Glantz and IVAW's Kris Goldsmith on Laura Flanders' GritTV
We turn our lense on the failures of the Veterans Administration and the military medical system. The half hour includes audio of soldiers denied care by the VA and interviews with family members of soldiers and veterans who’ve committed suicide as well as representatives of the VA and veterans groups fighting to improve the situation
We look at Winter Soldier in the context of resistance to the war in Iraq from inside the US military. We follow these soldiers during their testimony on capital hill, and look at cases of soldiers who refuse to fight – from well-known cases Lt Ehren Watada to less-known enlisted personnel, who were so disturbed at what he saw during their first tours in Iraq they refused to return a second time.
